Carry the work from one session to the next

After each session, Check-In follows up on what your client agreed to try. They reply by email, and before you meet again you get a brief on how it went and what's still unclear. Nothing goes out unless you approve it or turn on auto-send.

It focuses on what happens between sessions. Notes, billing and frameworks stay where they are.

“Where did we leave off?”

A session often starts with piecing the last few weeks back together from notes, messages and memory. By then, what your client tried has blurred into what they meant to try. Over sessions, the actual record is the pattern: what they tried, what stayed unclear and where the goal changed.

A client's journey

Composite example. Not a real client.

  1. Session 1

    The agreement

    Goal:
Run team meetings without taking them over.
    Agreed:
In Thursday's meeting, ask two people for their view before giving yours.
  2. Check-in 1

    The reply

“I prepped the questions, but the meeting got moved and I ran a quick stand-up instead. I talked the whole time.”

    Brief, client report:
They prepared, but didn't try the agreed step. The meeting changed format.
    Unknown:
Whether the prepared questions would have held up in the real meeting.
    Coaching move:
Ask what made the stand-up feel like it needed them to lead.
  3. Session 2

    The coach's read changes

The coach had treated the gap as a scheduling problem. In session, the client says silence in a meeting feels like losing control.

    Coach's private note:
My read was off. This isn't about planning; work on tolerating the pause.
    New agreement:
After asking a question in any meeting, wait five seconds.
  4. Check-in 2

    The reply

“Tried it twice. The first time someone jumped in with an idea I hadn't thought of. The second time nobody spoke and I filled the silence.”

    Brief, result:
    Mixed.
    Unknown:
What was different the second time.
    Coaching move:
    Start with the second meeting.
  5. Session 3

    The goal changes

The client says the real goal is being trusted to delegate, not running meetings. The coach records the change and the reason. Earlier attempts stay in history under the old goal.

How it works

  1. Record what your client agreed to try and the goal it serves.

  2. Approve the follow-up.

Check-In drafts it in your voice. You edit it and send it.

  3. Your client replies by email.

They say what they tried and what got in the way.

  4. Read the brief before you meet.

It keeps your client's words separate from any interpretation and says what's still unclear. It's also a chance to revise a read before you walk in.

What Check-In won't do

  • You and your client decide the commitments.
  • A reported attempt isn't counted as a success, and a good outcome isn't credited to coaching.
  • It doesn't score clients or rank coaches.
